Overview
The article “BlackBerry wins injunction preventing sales of Typo clip-on keyboard for iPhone” was published on The Toronto Star on March 31st, 2014 by The Toronto Star staff. The two multinational companies that attended a court meeting in California, in order to resolve a dispute, include Blackberry and Typo. The article is primarily focused on Blackberry’s ideal to prove that the company Typo is violating Blackberry’s intellectual property rights to its keyboard. This is due to the fact that Typo is creating and selling a physical keyboard whose design is fairly similar to Blackberry’s keyboard since the keys are placed on an angle. Typo is selling the keyboard through e-commerce means and as a result is available to various countries such as Canada and America. Overall, Typo’s keyboard can be clipped onto multiple versions of Apple Inc.’s iPhone5 and since Typo is selling without a licencing agreement, Blackberry has a prospect of proving that Typo is at fault.

Business Strand
Blackberry and Typo are both indisputably international companies whose products are available for sale in numerous of countries around the world. Nevertheless, the debate between the two companies precisely relates to the factors influencing success in international markets strand of business leadership. This is due to the fact that since Typo was selling a product whose features resembled Blackberry’s, without a licencing agreement, many legal issues arose. This ultimately caused Typo to lose large sums as profit as they were sued. This comes to show that factors such as similar designs in product features can ultimately lead to a legal issue. All in all, this proves that with international business and releases of new products, it is essential that the product does not violate any existing patents or copyrights as potential legal and financial issues may arise.

Opinion
In my opinion, I believe that Blackberry has all rights to a physical keyboard where the keys are positioned on an angle. Additionally, I believe that Typo’s product could potentially be a good investment for Blackberry. If Blackberry was to buy Typo and sell their physical keyboard, which can be put on thousands of iPhones, they may generate a large sum of revenue. Since Blackberry is trying to recover from its ‘outdated’ smartphone and prosper in the smartphone industry once again, selling the Typo keyboard can be a good start to their retrenchment strategy. This comes to show that in order for a company to be successful in an international market, factors such as overcoming legal issues is common. Overall, I believe that if Blackberry is to take advantage of the legal issue and buy Typo, it can significantly influence their sales in the international market.
